Brighton and Hove Green Party convenor Keith Taylor's comments on John Prescott's decision to give the go-ahead to build a stadium at Falmer should not go unchallenged (The Argus, October 29).
He tries to put himself onside with the fans by congratulating them for their campaign.
But his party first campaigned to have a stadium built at the Brighton Station site despite the fact they knew it would lead to city-centre gridlock and in the full knowledge it was never affordable to either the club or the city council.
Then they argued Withdean should be developed as a "community stadium". Apart from failing to recognise the need for a bigger venue for a club with ambitions, this ignored the fact such a location would have consigned the Seagulls to a life in the lower leagues.
The truth is that the Green Party has little understanding of the importance of football in Brighton and Hove. It backed the campaign against the Falmer bid in the face of the citywide referendum which produced a big "Yes" and the massive petition which backed it as the only realistic option.
It seems to me the Greens only ever trumpet the cause of popular democracy and public involvement when it suits them.
The real heroes truly have been the fans who backed the campaign, stuck with it when it seemed hard to live with and ultimately triumphed because the force of the argument won the day.
I count myself lucky to have been involved in campaigning with people who genuinely have a passion for something they understand and want.
When someone takes the trouble to write up the history of the Falmer For All campaign, the role of the supporters will undoubtedly be shown as critical.
