The United Nations is not as strong in its actions as its charter would advocate but it is the only organisation we have where peoples of the world can collectively debate and find peaceful solutions to global issues.

The charter provides a set of standards. That those standards are not upheld by various governments does not invalidate them.

It is politicians, such as those who went to war against Iraq, who undermine them.

As Jean Calder said in her article when quoting Eileen Daffern, it is up to ordinary people to put pressure on our politicians and representatives at the UN to bring them into line with the original principals of the charter (The Argus, October 22).

If there was no UN, it is likely the monopoly of the remaining superpower would be even more powerful, which is a terrifying prospect.
