Who can blame the pensioner for refusing to exhaust her small savings to keep paying the exorbitant council tax (The Argus, October 21)?
It's all very well for politicians to say people who can't afford to pay will receive help but there are many more citizens other than those receiving such rebates who struggle to pay it, including most low-paid, minimum-wage workers.
No one is expected to get above-inflation pay rises, pensions or benefits but you can sure, now the election year is ending, we will return to the whopping rises which preceded it.
One can only hope enough people will also refuse to pay more than the rate of inflation next year and force the Government to reform the system.
