Crawley caretaker boss Murray Jones has left the club just two days after being appointed.
Jones was due to take charge of the first team at Cambridge United on Saturday following the sacking of Francis Vines.
But Reds were plunged into more uncertainty yesterday when they announced he had left by mutual consent. Midfielder Simon Wormull will be in charge for the trip to the Abbey Stadium.
Jones' sudden departure increases the pressure on the board to find a new manager.
Crawley, who went full-time this season, are third bottom in the Conference and suffered a humiliating FA Cup exit against Ryman League Braintree at home on Saturday, which cost Vines his job.
General manager Paul Hobbs said: "Simon will be in charge for Saturday only. We have a pile of applicants as long as your arm to look through in the meantime."
Jones started the season as reserve team manager and first team coach. He was promoted to become Vines' No. 2 following the sacking Dave Swindlehurst last month. He declined to comment.
Wormull, 28, has coaching experience and has helped run community soccer schools in Crawley.
He is currently sidelined with a shin injury, suffered during the match against Braintree.
The former Tottenham trainee joined last November from Hornchurch and his previous clubs include Albion, Rushden and Stevenage. He signed a two-year-contract in August.
