What a pity Paul-John Harris takes such a narrow and selfish attitude to the tunnels of South Heighton, a small section of which happens to pass deep beneath his house.
He may not appreciate their historic and local importance but anyone who has a chance to visit them, as I was fortunate to do recently, will understand the vital role they played in the defence of this country.
They are an important part of our island story - as important as Bodiam, Pevensey and Dover castles and they need preserving for future generations.
Mr Harris's not-under-my-backyard attitude contrasts with that of his more community-minded neighbours.
To fill the tunnels in seems a poor way to repay the sacrifice of the hundreds of people who dug them and worked down there in appalling conditions in defence of the Sussex coastline.
The tunnels stand as a tribute to the service of these ordinary men and women and to the work of Geoff Ellis and the Newhaven Historical Society in uncovering this important remnant of our history.
