Work has begun to turn a seafront pavilion into a landmark building again.
The dilapidated Marina Pavilion in St Leonards has been closed for two years.
Since then plans have been underway to restore and extend the popular venue. The makeover will include a beach cafe, a restaurant on the upper level and modern conference facilities.
It will have a coloured glass front and council bosses said the revamped pavilion will stand out as a modern and creative design.
Hastings Borough Council leader Jeremy Birch said: "Once complete, the Marina Pavilion promises to be a wonderful attraction on St Leonards seafront.
"It will be a high-quality, year-round seafront business and marina are just another sign that our town is on the up."
Work by Sussex artists Caroline Le Breton and Jonathan Cole is being incorporated in to the design by local architect Neil Choudhury.
Contractors Westridge and engineers from the Hastings area have also been employed on the project.
