As with Addison's previous show about evolution, his new theme of the Periodic Table was merely a loose thread around which his routine meandered.
There were (thankfully) more good gags about cheap air travel, Inspector Morse and "gay bombs" than chemistry.
He was for the most part likeable and intelligent company, especially during an inspired, extended riff about the London bombings.
There were times when he was punchably smug (Only the worst kind of w****r would care whether Kwik Save stocks houmous) and surprisingly awkward.
But when he ranted, his aim was invariably true - Richard Littlejohn, creationists, hippies and Trevor MacDonald were enjoyably cut down to size.
An entire show of Addison venting spleen about the inanities of popular culture and right wing bigotry would probably be a comedic milestone.
Let's hope that's where he chooses to go next.
