"It's hip-hop but it's more than that," says DJ Vadim of his One Self project.
The "more" refers to soul, sensual funk and myriad other influences. As Yarah Bravo, one of the outfit's two MCs, puts it: "We're from so many different backgrounds that we kind of represent everything."
The core trio first came together during Vadim's The Russian Percussion tours across the US a few years back.
Having previously worked with a host of collaborators for each album, Vadim decided he wanted to work with a small, stable group for his next project. Bravo and her fellow MC Blurum 13 bonded through a mutual appreciation and the perfect ease with which they complement each other's style.
The global bent to the group's sound was inspired not by the members' diverse backgrounds (Vadim was born in St Petersburg and raised in London, Bravo is a Swedish-born Chilean/Brazilian) or their worldwide touring schedules, but by Vadim's new home, East Ham.
"It's such a cultural hotpot that it makes sense that I'd put it in the music somehow," he says. "It's a real blend of all the sounds of the people of the area we live in."
That blend includes Indian sitars, flamenco guitars and African beats and will make you very happy indeed.
Vadim will also be playing a DJ set and there'll be support from Medicine Children (live).
