In a recent TV programme, comedian Paul Merton chose some of his favourite TV moments which would make a great night in.
Among them was one of a couple of veteran performers. I immediately remembered the late, great Sandy Powell, a popular comedian in the Forties and Fifties.
Powell once had a prime-time radio show and his catchphrase, "Can you hear me, Mother?", was echoed by many of his listeners.
A friend and I, both trained dancers, attended an audition in the early-Fifties for a summer show.
We passed but the show's seaside venue was a long way from home, we would have had to live in digs and were only 17 at the time. Our mothers put a stop to it.
The star of the show we would have danced in was Sandy Powell.
