Have you ever had the pleasure of witnessing a musical autopsy? If the answer is yes then you must have been among the audience at the Dome on Sunday afternoon, treated to a true comedy first courtesy of Paul Merton and his impro chums.
Ably assisted by a team of performers Merton swept through the kind of scenarios which you could only get during live improvisation with an up-for-it Brighton crowd.
Erotica, a Shakespearean tale told the morning after the night before, and even a simple request for favourite garden objects drew a bizarre array of comedy moments.
The show takes its lead from the legendary Channel 4 programme Whose Line Is It Anyway?, even kidnapping pianist Richard Vranch to add his distinct instrumental effects.
The beauty of the show is that it allows each performer to show their true strengths, from quickwitted one-liners to memorable character creations, all devised to great effect by different members of the team.
And while Merton remains the household name in the line-up, he avoided hogging the stage, instead remaining in quiet control as a good host should before delivering the kind of lines which have secured his name.
But it was the enthusiasm of the audience which made the show such a success and delivered up the best moments.
So if you have never had the pleasure of witnessing a musical autopsy you just do not know what you are missing out on.
