this is Brighton offers a critical view of what's hot for the coming week.
Roddy Frame, Old Market Theatre, Hove, Friday, October 14
- Although Aztec Camera was always essentially a solo vehicle, Frame has opted to record under his own name since the late Nineties. He still deals in literate, sophisticated pop, though now of an acoustic bent which shows off his underrated guitar-playing skills. Last year's acclaimed Surf was just Frame's guitar and voice, unadorned and recorded in his front room. Starts 8pm, tickets cost £17.50/£15.50. Call 01273 736222.
Orange County Sound, The Cella, Hove, Saturday, October 15
- San Francisco duo John Dwyer (formerly of the Coachwhips) and Patrick Mullins deal with the big issues of life - like love and death - on OCS 3 & 4, a new double album collecting material they recorded between 2001-2003. The record sees them strip their sound down to its minimal essentials, veering in a raw but melodic acoustic folk direction coupled with abstract noise textures. Starts 8pm, tickets cost £4. Call 01273 770002.
Crystal Cabinet Harvest Festival, Hanbury Ballroom, Brighton, Sunday, October 16
- This seasonal all-dayer features six bands, including the horn-laden folktronica of Oddfellows Casino and the chamber-pop of Stars Of Aviation (above). Blanket, Good Morning Captain, Birdengine and The Fabulous Nobody also appear. The venue will be decorated with fresh organic produce and you can take along tins of food to donate to a local homeless shelter. Starts 2pm, tickets cost £5/£4. Call 01273 605789.
Los De Abajp, Komedia, Brighton, Wednesday, October 19
- Meaning "those from below", Los De Abajo combine revolutionary politics one track features a vocals from a Zapatista leader with hip-hop, salsa, and mariachi flavours. Born out of the Mexican ska scene in the early Nineties, they first came to prominence on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Describing their present style "tropipunk" the punk is thankfully reflected mainly in the lyrics the band's energetic, eight-strong live shows are the stuff of legend. Starts 9pm, tickets cost £10 or £8. Call 01273 647100.
The Chalets, University Of Brighton, Wednesday, October 19
- These Dublin girls and boys are a new-wave Monkees with a mischievous glint in their eye. They make their own record sleeves, clothes and promo videos, and already count Dame Elton John among their fans. Their gentler numbers recall Belle & Sebastian or The Magic Numbers, while their more upbeat moments veer towards jerky, B-52s-esque pop and Fifties stylings. Starts 8pm, tickets £ tbc. Call 01273 642870.
Morning Runner, Hanbury Ballroom, Brighton, Wednesday, October 19
- Reviews compare Morning Runner to Starsailor and Keane, they've supported Snow Patrol, Athlete and Coldplay, and Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq are fans. That may have many of you running for the hills and, with a major label deal and a debut album being recorded with Razorlight producer John Cornfield, you may have to stay there for some time. Starts at 8pm, tickets cost £6. Call 01273 728999.
