Kerry Mayo vowed today to bounce back from one of the worst performances of his ten-year Albion career.
Mayo's place is under threat against Cardiff at Withdean tomorrow after a below-par display when the Seagulls lost 3-1 at home to Norwich in their last Championship outing 13 days ago.
The leftback was at fault for the Canaries' crucial second goal just before half-time and was substituted early in the second half.
"I'm big enough and man enough to say I didn't play well at all," admitted Mayo. "The first half especially was one of the worst games I have played in an Albion shirt.
"I've got no excuses. I'm fit from injury, it was just one of those games that didn't go right for me.
"I'll bounce back. I'm still buzzing in training. It's not a question of confidence, because I'm always confident.
"You are entitled to a bad game now and again and I'm not going to let that destroy my confidence or get to me.
"That game has gone now. Fingers crossed I have done enough in training to keep my place."
Manager Mark McGhee has the option of switching Paul Reid back into Mayo's position and recalling Gary Hart to the right side of defence as Albion aim for their second win of the season.
Individual players were slated by a small minority of supporters during and after the Norwich debacle. Cardiff's visit gives them an opportunity to put that all behind them.
"Supporters have their opinions and if they want to criticise me they can," said Mayo. "I'm not bothered about it, I'll take it on the chin, because they are the first to praise you when you do something well.
"You know yourself if you have done well or not. I have been in the game long enough to realise you take the rough with the smooth.
"This is a chance for us to rally ourselves, get the three points we need and get the fans back on our side. It's only a very few that are doubters. It's a shame really when you consider what we have given the club and supporters over the last five or six years. It's as if they are getting a little bit greedy and expecting too much.
"I'm not having a go at the supporters, they are fantastic. It's just that a very few have short memories if you think back to six or seven years ago and where we are now.
"We've got to be allowed the odd blip and the majority of fans appreciate that.
"We have worked so hard to get into the position we are in. The last thing we want to do is throw it all away but sometimes in a game it doesn't go right for you as a team or as individuals."
McGhee could make as many as four changes against Cardiff. Richard Carpenter is expected to return from injury, while Alexandre Frutos and Jake Robinson are pressing for starting roles.
