An appeal has been made for volunteers to mount a campaign against an invasion of big businesses.
Starbucks, Tesco and Yo! Sushi are coming to the Jubilee Street development in Brighton, which incorporates the award-winning £14 million city library.
Independent traders, for which the North Laine is renowned, fear the arrival of such large corporations could threaten the unique character of their quirky shopping district.
Debbie Charman, of Cheltenham Place, Brighton, would like to hear from anyone interesting in fighting the arrival of big chain stores.
Ms Charman said: "We don't want the character of the North Laine ruined by an influx of those places, who all have enough exposure in Churchill Square, as well as all over the rest of Brighton and Hove.
"How can we stop the march of these faceless giants into our area?
"All we can hope for is a boycott. We must work together.
"If anyone is interested in mounting a campaign or has any ideas about organising a boycott or protest, please contact me as soon as possible."
