Southern Water has teamed up with recycling container firm Straight plc to help households conserve water.

They will be selling cut-price water butts next weekend.

The butts can store 200 litres of rain water and cost £12. They come with a free rain diverter kit which usually costs £9.95.

They will be on sale at the Southern Water offices in Yeoman Road, Worthing, and Hawth Theatre, Hawth Avenue, Crawley, on Sunday, October 16, 10am to 3pm.

Meyrick Gough, of Southern Water, said: "Butts can help relieve increasing pressure on resources by providing rain water for plants. Garden watering is usually about six per cent of that supplied but on a hot day this can increase to 70 per cent.

"A garden sprinkler alone can use more than 1,000 litres of water in an hour - enough to supply six people for a day."

Sussex had eight months of below-average rainfall from November to June, resulting in the worst drought since 1976.
