There are lots of "oohs" and "aahs" about the "maternal instincts" of Jessie the cow, who successfully lactated to feed her adopted calf (The Argus, September 29).
"The psychology must have kicked in," said the farm manager.
I hope those who found this story touching will stop to consider how the psychology kicks in for the unfortunate cows whose calves are taken away from them at a few days old so their milk can be sold.
Their maternal instincts are apparently not so worthy of interest.
