this is Brighton offers a critical view of what's hot for the coming week.
T-Rextasy, Concorde 2, Brighton, Friday, September 30
- Nearly three decades after his untimely death, Marc Bolan is still a glam legend and widely hailed for paving the way for punk and new wave. To mark his birthday, highly-acclaimed tribute band T-Rextasy will be rocking through a number of classic T Rex hits, including, we hope, Jeepster, Twentieth Century Boy and Get It On. T-Rextasy not only do justice to the sound but look the part too - and proudly state that they do so without the aid of wigs. Starts 7pm, tickets cost £10, call 01273 673311.
Steve Harley, Dome Concert Hall, Brighton, Saturday, October 1
- With its irresistibly catchy melody, stop-start arrangement and Spanish-style guitar solo beloved of air guitarists the world over, Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) is still one of the most recognised tunes in British pop music. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of a track which has now apparently been covered in no less than 100 languages, Steve Harley comes to town with the latest incarnation of Cockney Rebel. Listen out for other hits from his ten albums to date, including Judy Teen. Starts 8pm, tickets cost £18.50 / £15, call 01273 709709.
Queen Adreena, Concorde 2, Brighton, Monday, October 3
- Having first made a splash in the early-Nineties with Daisy Chainsaw, the pressures of fame forced Katie Jane Garside to quit the post-punk outfit after only one album. Following a lengthy period away from the limelight, however, she returned at the turn of the millennium fronting Queen Andreena, which featured former Chainsaw guitarist Crispin Gray. The band are now touring to promote new album The Butcher And The Butterfly. Expect dark and haunting alternative rock. Starts 7pm, tickets cost £8, call 01273 673311.
M People, Brighton Centre, Brighton, Thursday, October 6
- Movin' On Up, One Night In Heaven, How Can I Love You More... Love 'em or hate 'em, it's hard to think of a band who epitomise early-Nineties house-influenced soul pop as much as Heather Small and chums. Now touring again after six years in the wilderness, they may struggle with the fact club culture has moved on somewhat in the decade since their heyday but they still, clearly, have a large and loyal following. The fact they once won the Mercury Music Prize, however, remains beyond comprehension. Starts 6.30pm, tickets cost £18.50, call 0870 900 9100.
Elevators Biggish Band, Komedia, Brighton, Saturday, October 8
- Deeply rooted in the sound of Sixties' Chicago, The Elevators are one of the most established electric blues acts on the circuit today, with an authentic and highly credible sound which has seen them become regulars at festivals and clubs across Europe. Drawing inspiration from the likes of BB King, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy, this gig - with an expanded lineup and featuring Wilf Taylor - is not to be missed by anyone who loves the timeless appeal of a twelve-bar chord structure and a baby who done gone left them. Starts 9pm, tickets £8.50/6.50, call 01273 647100.
