Hearing the Sunday newspaper fall on to the door mat, I braced myself for the heavy lifting operation needed to pick up this weekly heavyweight.
Struggling back down the hallway, I couldn't help wondering what weight I was carrying and, more interestingly, the weight of the bag carried by our delivery boys and girls.
The paper and all its supplements were soon on the scales and registering a mighty 2lb 10oz.
My newsagent tells me that, on average, a dozen Sunday papers are carried in each delivery bag - the equivalent of about two dozen weekday newspapers. The total weight, therefore, is a staggering 31lb 8oz for an average bag.
What an amazing collection of unsung heroes these newspaper carriers are.
Let's hear it for all the great boys and girls who deliver the news to our doors.
