I was talking to a 91-year-old gentleman who worked at Brighton Station 50 years ago.
He said that at midnight he and his colleagues would put on miners' hats, climb up to the station roof and collect all the pigeon eggs which had been laid in the nests.
He was paid a shilling for every egg he collected (5p in new money) and this procedure decreased the population without culling the adult birds.
What a good idea. Perhaps we could try it again with seagulls in mind?
