I'd like to confirm Dave Lepper MP's assertions (Letters, September 21) that the Secretary of State for Education, Ruth Kelly, was not jeered when she was in Brighton last week.
Dave Lepper, my MP, and Ruth Kelly kindly took the time to speak to those of us protesting about
the appalling secondary school allocations policy which so unfairly discriminates against those of us who live in the south-east of Brighton.
Your reporter heard me jeering at Coun Pat Hawkes, chair of the children, families and schools committee, and David Hawker, director of education for Brighton and Hove City Council. As the architects of this disasterous policy, jeering is the least they deserve.
Let us hope a different and fairer secondary school admissions system is invoked as soon as possible. If not, I fear the electorate of south-east Brighton may wreak its revenge on this Labour council come the local elections in May 2007.
