Businesses witnessed a jump in sales as thousands of people arrived for the launch of an annual festival dedicated to the palate.
Some shops in Horsham reported a boost of up to 50 per cent in turnover as the third Food and Drink Festival got under way with the Bigger Nibble, featuring gourmet chefs, smelly cheese and beer classes.
Stalls set up in Horsham's Drill Hall and Carfax offered produce made in and around the town, with more than 1,500 passing through in six hours on Saturday. Peter Wood, of Woody's Homemade Food in Partridge Green, said: "Shopping these days has become so anonymous but with these events it helps to be able to put a face to the producer."
Another 3,000 people were at Westons Farm, Itchingfield, for a ploughing match, food tasting and barbecue organised by farmer and businessman David Exwood.
The festival runs until October 9, with full details on events and tastings available by calling 01403 215542.
