The decline of Brighton's West Pier began when conservationists lobbied to stop the owners demolishing part of the end of the structure due to the expense of repair and the need to make it pay.
This led to ownership transferring to the West Pier Trust and it's been downhill since.
But rejoice! As a stark, abstract sculpture, the pier looks better than it has in years.
