The nephew of a former boxing champion has been ordered to pay £250 in compensation to a man he punched.

Lewis Minter, whose uncle is former world middleweight boxing champion Alan Minter, lashed out during a late-night fracas outside a Crawley nightclub.

Minter, 22, of Church Road, Worth, Crawley, admitted a charge of affray.

The father-of-one was accused of causing actual bodily harm to Wayne Beckett following the disturbance outside the Bar Med, in the High Street, in August last year.

During a trial held at Hove Crown Court in July this year, Minter denied the charge and claimed he was defending his brother, Lee.

The court was shown a CCTV recording showing Minter throwing a straight right at Mr Beckett, who was knocked down by the blow.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict after more than five hours of deliberation and a re-trial was due to start yesterday.

But at the start of the hearing at Lewes Crown Court, the prosecution offered no evidence on the assault charge and a formal not guilty verdict was recorded.

Minter was ordered to pay Mr Beckett compensation and was sentenced to a two-year community rehabilitation order for affray.

He was also ordered to pay £172 costs.

Jonathan Ingram, defending, said: "This is a young lad who has learnt a lesson and is unlikely to trouble the courts again."

Judge Simon Coltart told Minter apart from this offence he was a perfectly respectable young man who was clearly sorry for what had happened.

But he warned Minter he could face a jail sentence if he got into trouble again.
