I read with interest your article on Councillor Dawn Barnett's proposal for a CCTV camera to be installed in Hangleton (The Argus, September 16).
However, I wish to challenge the comments made by one of the shopkeepers who said "Hangleton has always been a rough area".
I have lived in Hangleton for 31 years. I have never known it to be "rough" or "bad". Recently there have been a few youth-related problems and historically more serious incidents have occurred but no more than any other part
of Brighton and Hove.
As a resident of Hangleton, having grown up here and attended school here, I have taken this attack on the vibrant and active Hangleton community
quite personally and would like to see some form of public apology from the shopkeeper. I am sure I am not alone in being offended by his comments.
The police and the excellent Police Community Support Officers are working hard to resolve the problems but it's not going to happen overnight.
I am in favour of Councillor Barnett's proposal for a CCTV camera at the Grenadier because it would act as a deterrent.
But it would not be the solution to all the problems. It is down to the community as a whole to work with the police and the agencies.
Hangleton is still a great area to live in and will continue to be so.
