I was surprised and saddened by Melvyn Lawes' letter (September 7) in which he wondered if the world would come to our rescue if the Katrina disaster was in the UK.
Has he forgotten how an ungrudging America put war-ravaged Europe on its feet again with Marshall Aid?
I recommend Mr Lawes ponder John Donne's maxim: "I am involved in Mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls: it tolls for thee."
