Bus journeys in Brighton and Hove seem to take too long and it's obvious why. So much time is taken up by drivers giving change to passengers who don't seem to have it in themselves to have the correct fare ready.
It's high time Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company took a leaf out of Edinburgh's transport system. Passengers there are required to have the correct fare ready and place into a clear perspex box which, after the bus driver checks it, drops into a security box - a quick seamless process.
My idea was beautifully illustrated yesterday on a bus journey with my girlfriend. A passenger in front of us attempted to pay the "Saver" fare (£2.60) with a £20 note.
The driver diplomatically advised the passenger he couldn't change this and did the passenger have anything smaller? With this the passenger handed him a £10 note!
I am sure if we adopted the Edinburgh's fare process the buses would reach their destinations a lot sooner and perhaps make bus drivers less vulnerable with money safely dropping into security boxes.
