Val Cane's suggestion that we are making a "knee-jerk" reaction and that "bus fares will have to go up" is somewhat inappropriate (Letters, September 7).
Petrol prices are increasing every week, yet we are continuing to hold our fares at January levels and hope to continue to do so for as long as we can.
But with pump prices set to breach the £1-a-litre barrier, we cannot bury our heads in the sand and ignore the financial consequences for our business, which gets through more than seven million litres of diesel a year.
The most popular bus ticket is our one-day saver which, at £2.60, is still a fantastic bargain.
