Council officials are today taking legal action to get rid of an illegal Travellers' camp.
The travellers moved on to Stanmer Park, Brighton, during the bank holiday weekend.
About 30 caravans and trailers set up camp in the popular beauty spot.
Brighton and Hove City Council is applying to the courts to evict them.
Emma Nuttall, of the Brighton-based Friends, Families and Travellers advocacy group, said the travellers had no choice but to camp in public parks because of a shortage of official legal sites.
The problem had been caused by the closure of the official city site at Horsdean, which has 24 plots. It has been shut for several months for refurbishment.
Ms Nuttall said: "The council really has to provide some sites. People have to stop somewhere."
In July a camp of about 80 vehicles was disbanded from Hollingbury Park and earlier this summer other travellers moved in to Braypool playing field.
Environment councillor Gill Mitchell said: "Stanmer Park is not a suitable place for travellers to be allowed to stay which is why the council is taking legal action."
