Daredevil Samantha Perkins is fighting to recoup money she raised for a record-breaking challenge which has been dogged by postponements.

Mrs Perkins, 34, was first due to ride a 200mph motorbike blindfolded last summer in a bid to set the world's first female land speed record unsighted.

She was due to be among 20 contenders taking part in the stunt on a 1,000cc Suzuki GSXR at a two-mile airstrip at Elvington airfield, York.

But after 13 of the challengers had made their attempt, torrential rain meant the remaining riders - including Mrs Perkins - had to postpone their bids.

Since then mother-of-three Mrs Perkins, from Bexhill, claims five further attempts have been postponed for various reasons over the course of the year.

The delays have stretched her patience so far she has decided to scrap the bid altogether and claim back the £1,700 she raised from event organisers Record Breakers.

However, the company has told her the money has already been donated to their designated charity, British Blind Sports, and offered only a partial refund of £600.

Now she plans to meet solicitors in an effort to claim back the cash.

Mrs Perkins, a staff engineer for Elite Management in Preston Road, Brighton, said: "It's unreasonable for them to keep the money because Record Breakers have kept postponing.

"This is money that had been given to me in good faith by people thinking I was going to carry out this challenge.

"I have taken time off work but with every postponement I've had to ask for more time off and it is not fair on my employers.

"Also, it is unfair on the people who gave me the money on the basis I was to do this challenge and that challenge hasn't gone ahead."

Record Breakers said it is under no obligation to refund Mrs Perkins' money because it has not cancelled the event, merely postponed it.

A spokeswoman claimed there has only been one postponement last September, which Mrs Perkins strongly disputes.

She has produced headed paperwork from Record Breakers apparently showing that other dates were set for the challenge.

However, a Record Breakers spokeswoman said: "There has only been one postponement.

"We have offered her another challenge date for September 29 and hope she can make it.

"We are under no obligation to refund the money because we haven't actually cancelled it."

Mrs Perkins said offering her a £600 refund would only enable her to hand back money to some of her sponsors.

She said: "It's making me feel bitter."
