I swim all year round at Saltdean but am sometimes deterred by the strong smell of sewage (not rotting sea weed).

The most recent occurrence of this was at 4.30pm on August 18, when the beach was crowded with children. Many people commented on the smell.

In the morning, the sea had been clear and pleasant to swim in but by 4.30pm I wouldn't have risked it.

I am awaiting a reply from Southern Water to find out at what time sewage was discharged from the Portobello outfall.

I have also been in touch with the Environment Agency, which informs me the water is tested once a week and only in the summer months.

I would be extremely surprised if Saltdean beach received a Blue Flag Award with such infrequent testing.
