While I agree with Beryl Fleming (Letters, August 30) that young people should be encouraged to take up walking, she is wrong about the ascents of Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike being impossible in 24 hours.

This particular accomplishment is known as the Three Peaks Challenge and can be done independently or through an organised charity event, such as those run by Care.

There is also a Three Peaks Yacht Race each year, in which the competitors sail from Barmouth to Fort William via Caernarfon and Whitehaven and ascend all three mountains. This does take five or six days, though.
