I often visit Shoreham and have spent many happy years fishing along the coast between Shoreham and Brighton but last week I was astounded by the open display during my "last" fishing trip on the beach.
I knew I would be able to catch the high tide about midnight and the full moon would help me see while fishing as I was short of equipment.
But I never expected to see the type of fishing going on along the promenade in front of the Ramada Hotel (formerly the Norfolk).
It was about 11pm when I saw a number of males hanging around the area. Having had a serious confrontation many years ago, I had chosen my fishing area specifically so it could not be reached easily by the public without me being aware of them.
I noticed these males were hanging around in a single line along by the beach cafe heading westwards. I also noticed CCTV on the roof of this cafe and so presumed somebody would be keeping an eye out.
I observed that every so often, men would come along, walk repeatedly up and down then suddenly jump down to the beach and start what looked like an indecent act.
I was a little shocked to say the least.
This went on for hours, with people coming and going, so to speak. In the end, I started to take pictures in the hope the flash photos would put them off.
I am horrified this takes place in the evening and would not take my children fishing in this area. Heaven knows what this popular family spot would be like in the mornings with this sort of thing going on.
Yes, I caught a lot of fish that evening and a large bass, which I enjoyed eating the following day.
However, my evening was ruined by this event and I do not expect to be fishing that area of the coast again. I will no doubt report this incident to the authorities.
