A £2.2 million nightclub featuring live bands and DJs is to open in a seaside town.

The Funktion Rooms will open in November in Pevensey Road, central Eastbourne, and bosses hope it will emerge as a nationally-recognised venue.

The three-room club will open six days a week and feature music from live bands to DJs playing everything from drum and bass and house to hip-hop and R&B.

Conversion work starts on September 12 by UK designers behind leading club Stealth, regarded as Nottingham's answer to the Fabric superclub in London.

Up to 60 full and part-time jobs will be created for posts including bar staff, cleaners, door hosts and maintenance staff.

Striking computer-generated images show what the three rooms will look like, each equipped with a custom-built sound system used at festivals like Glastonbury.

The ambitious scheme is being led by London-based firm Mansito Ltd.

Managing director Rob Jackson said: "It's not going to be your all-day, binge-drinking type of place.

"It will feature music that will appeal to people right across the board.

"No matter what style of music you are into, the Funktion Rooms will cater for all and every room will be self-contained.

"All the permission we need is in place and building work is due to start this month, with a view to opening on the last Saturday in November."

The building of the nightclub in Eastbourne marks another shift in the town's aim to rid its blue-rinse image.

Community leaders have long tried to ditch its God's Waiting Room tag and have actively sought younger visitors through campaigns.

Posters and escalator panels promoting Eastbourne as a more adventurous destination went up on the London Underground network.

Now the opening of the Funktion Rooms signals another move towards luring a younger crowd and boosting Eastbourne's economic potential.

Mr Jackson said: "We think Brighton has a lot going for it but we also see Eastbourne as a place that is increasingly on the up.

"We first looked at Eastbourne as a place to build a club seven years ago.

"But since then it has come on in leaps and bounds and the difference is there to see.

"Also, from working with the local authority, it seems there is a determination there to do away with Eastbourne's God's Waiting Room image.

"From the research we have conducted, there seem to be a lot of people who live in Eastbourne but who don't actually go out there.

"We think that's because there is nothing really out there to attract them.

"We hope the Funktion Rooms will be different and draw them in.

"We love the town, the people and, most importantly, the potential."

A web site has been set up at www.funktionrooms.com Borough council leader Ian Lucas said he had heard rumours of the club opening but declined to comment further until he had more details.
