I note with dismay that the developer of Hove's King Alfred site, Karis, are now suggesting that the sports facilities in the proposed tower block complex will be considerably smaller than those currently there.

It is scandalous that Brighton and Hove City Council is prepared to contemplate the removal of the pool and other sporting facilities provided at the King Alfred centre for the five years it will take to construct the proposed flats.

We must also ask whether Hove's infrastructure can support the construction of 750 additional dwellings.

There are no schools in the immediate vicinity, traffic problems already exist at the Kingsway/Hove Street junction and parking is already stretched to the limits.

There is currently a hosepipe ban. If recent climatic problems persist, the development will present serious threats to the health, comfort and stability of the greatly increased local population.

It is difficult to understand how the council's policy and resources committee can fail to reject the hideous piles which Karis is proposing to build.

I hope the Conservative group on the council will be supported by the Liberal Democrats and Green Party councillors in ensuring the proposed King Alfred development receives neither landowners' agreement or planning permission.
