Albion are poised to clarify the future of Wayne Henderson today as Mark McGhee makes a bid to strengthen his squad before the transfer deadline.
The Seagulls want to extend goalkeeper Henderson's expiring one-month loan from Aston Villa until Christmas.
That has to be done by today's 5pm cut-off but Villa are reluctant to let Henderson stay on that basis as it would prevent them from recalling him.
The compromise is renewing the loan for another month, giving Villa instant recall and negating the need for the deal to be completed prior to the deadline.
Albion would only then be able to keep hold of Henderson for one further month after that, forcing the want-away shot-stopper back to Villa Park by early November unless he was signed permanently.
Henderson is anxiously awaiting the outcome of the dispute following his inclusion in the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad for next Tuesday's European Championship qualifier against France in Cork.
Albion manager Mark McGhee is eager to add at least one and up to three new faces prior to the deadline following Monday's first victory of the season at home to Plymouth.
He has rejected the chance to add an Italian flavour to his already cosmopolitan squad. "We were offered an opportunity to go to Italy and speak to a couple of players but they would have been by recommendation only without us seeing them play," McGhee revealed. "It was too short notice and too exotic.
"There is one foreign lad we have been talking to for a while who we might still be able to bring here.
"Regardless of what happened against Plymouth we haven't got a lot more players.
"We've got Federico Turienzo to come back, Charlie Oatway and Alexis Nicolas and one or two others but we need some bodies to give us a bit more strength and variety."
