I wish to point out some inaccuracies in Superintendent Kevin Moore's letter (August 19).

Despite his claim "there were no police officers from the Metropolitan Police in attendance" at the smashEDO march in Brighton on August 13, I recognised one officer from the Forward Intelligence Unit (FIT) of the Met.

Being in attendance regularly at demos in London, where FIT officers are present, I was able to identify him and have photographic evidence to prove this.

I think Superintendent Moore should be made aware of the presence on Brighton's streets of "infiltrators" from other police forces.

Secondly, his claim that individuals are acting "unlawfully" by attending this protest is legally inaccurate.

Under the 1984 Public Order Act it is indeed an offence for organisers not to inform the police of the route of a march beforehand but this applies only to the organisers and doesn't make the march illegal.

If the police had been concerned about the possibility of serious disruption, they could have applied for the demo and march to be banned.
