Whether you're a fan of the Bard or not, Oddsocks' down to earth and energetic production of The Tempest is refreshingly accessible.
Newhaven's Victorian fortress has a massive parade ground which provides the atmospheric setting for Oddsocks's mobile theatre - an old fashioned gypsy cart and versatile backdrop for the play.
Dressed in colourful garb, performers interact with the audience throughout the play. Oddsocks' version of The Tempest is abridged, including all the "bard's best bits" and injecting vast quantities of humour into the performance. There is a contemporary, almost pantomime feel to the play which makes it more appealing to a wider audience, including younger children.
The Tempest begins with Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, overthrown by his brother and cast adrift on a desert island. With the help of Aerial, his spirit sidekick and all the magical powers he can muster, Prospero sets out to reclaim his rightful title and avenge his betrayers. Mystery, music, magic and mayhem follow.
Seats are available or you can bring a rug and sit on the grass. Refreshments will be available from Searchlight Cafe - or better still, bring a picnic.
