Growth is down at Gatwick as a result of last month's bomb attacks in London.
Airport owner and operator the BAA released statistics on the number of passengers using the airport in July.
More than 3.5 million passengers passed through Gatwick during July, up 3.3 per cent on July 2004 but down on the average growth during the last 12 months, which stands at 5.7 per cent.
Heathrow Airport suffered a drop of 0.6 per cent in passenger numbers compared to July 2004, bucking the trend of steady growth over the past 12 months.
Stansted's passenger growth was also slightly down.
About 830,000 long-haul passengers passed through Gatwick in July and two new routes to Africa were launched, by Ethiopian Airlines and Air Namibia.
Virgin Atlantic launched routes to Nassau and Havana.
