I can reassure Dr Bartlett (Letters, August 3) that existing free permits in Area H parking zone of Brighton will be honoured until they expire.
The Area H permit system, under the review proposals, will be a phased introduction of charging with a cut-off point, after which renewals would be charged at the new rate.
As regards the number of permits per household system, this will be introduced with immediate effect for new permit applicants if a new scheme is brought in.
The system of issuing one permit per household would be phased in over a period of time for existing permit holders. Brighton and Hove City Council will look at supply and demand and if there are spaces still to be allocated, households that have requested a second permit will receive one.
The requirement to issue only one permit per household would be waived in the event that there is no waiting list for permits in the parking scheme.
As mentioned in my previous letter, at present there are 1,700 spaces in Area H and 2,200 permits because some households have more than two.
Our aim is to introduce a fairer system for all in Area H. Visitor permits will remain at up to 50 per year.
