I was pleased to read Councillor Geoffrey Theobald's letter about welcome signs (Letters, August 4) as I agree they should be located at the city boundary.
I first raised this issue with the council in May 1997, more than a month after local government reorganisation, as the sign at the Pylons still proclaimed "East Sussex".
Initially there was some dispute over who owned the signs but eventually it was agreed that ownership had been transferred to Brighton and Hove together with other East Sussex property.
The signs were then moved to the new border with East Sussex at Falmer and Saltdean. Unfortunately, this left no sign at the Pylons and, more than eight years later, this is still the position.
Welcome signs were erected at Patcham (north of the Black Lion) and at Hollingbury in Ditchling Road. When I complained that these were not on the boundary I was told it had been decided to locate them there as this would welcome vehicles coming off the Brighton by-pass.
It is disappointing that even the efforts of a leading councillor have, so far, been unsuccessful.
Let us hope that a sense of civic pride will eventually prevail and that proper boundary signs will be provided.
