A higher proportion of people in Brighton and Hove are self-employed than anywhere else in the South East.
In total 20.3 per cent or 26,000 of the city's work force are independent workers, compared to a regional average of 14.4 per cent.
The figures cover all kinds of jobs, from construction to lap dancing and have been collected by trade union GMB.
In East Sussex, 17.2 per cent or 39,000 of those in employment work for themselves, while in West Sussex the figure is 13.6 per cent or 50,000.
In Britain as a whole, there are 3.46 million self-employed workers, 12.6 per cent of the workforce.
