Last Sunday, the students of Patcham House School took part in a unique, possibly record-breaking event, performing the play Romeo And Juliet at the Pavilion Theatre, Brighton.
One Night of Shakespeare was a nationwide project run by the BBC and organised with the Shakespeare for Schools team. About 400 UK schools took part and Patcham House was the only school in Brighton to be selected.
Following months of work, including workshops with the National Youth Theatre, its production of Romeo And Juliet was a tremendous success for the cast, whose performances were artistic and moving.
It was their first production in a live theatre and more than half the school took part in some aspect of the production, either acting, dancing or creating props and costumes.
The play starred Richard Poole as Romeo, Ella Blake as Juliet and Joshua Ripley as Mercutio.
It could be a recordbreaking performance because it was probably the greatest number of Shakespeare plays ever performed on one night (although this still needs to be verified by The Guinness Book Of Records).
The staff at the Pavilion Theatre was fantastic and made sure the Patcham House production went smoothly.
I am proud of everyone who took part in this play and made it such an amazing event.
-Clare Cheetham, director of Romeo And Juliet and Patcham House School teacher
