Further to the letters about walking and driving to school (Dawn Barnett, June 30, Louise Markanday, July 7), Portslade Infant School, like many other schools, has recently produced a school travel plan.
A positive outcome has been the launch of our first "walking bus", beginning next school year, which we hope will include a "stop" at St Nicolas Junior School.
Because of the difference in start times between the schools, and by way of demonstrating the support for the scheme by the head teacher, Mrs Judy Langthorne, the passengers of the walking bus can have early access to the infant school premises accompanied by adult volunteers.
Hopefully, parents and children who live near each other will arrange to walk to school in small groups.
Brighton and Hove City Council can provide advice, training and insurance for anyone interested in running the scheme at their school.
-Jo Brooksbank, walking bus co-ordinator, Portslade
