DISABLED people will find it hard to get to George Street in Hove if it is pedestrianised, say objectors.
They are complaining that new disabled bays will be too far from the shops. Brighton and Hove Council has advertised proposals for loading and disabled bays to be introduced from March 19. There have been 47 objections by traders. They say the bays in Church Road and Blatchington Road will cause congestion and danger. And they fear it will be hard for some traders to load up when the bays are so far from their shops. The objections will be considered at a special highways meeting at Hove Town Hall on Monday at 6pm. Traffic engineer Peter Bloxham said that there would be some inconvenience. But he added: "Overall, the environmental improvements will create a far more pleasant area in which people can work and shop." He said that traders would be able to load and unload outside the closure times of 10am to 4pm between Mondays and Saturdays. Mr Bloxham added that disabled people would also have unrestricted access to George Street outside those hours. He said that there should not be problems in Church Road and Blatchington Roads as there was plenty of parking.
