TRADERS have failed in their bid to stop Brighton and Hove Council from making George Street at Hove into a pedestrian precinct during the daytime from next week.
They are worried because they feel their livelihood is at stake if customers who currently come by car go elsewhere. But the council believes equally strongly that the experimental scheme will work. Whatever their feelings, shopkeepers must do their best now to ensure that it does. After all, everyone wants George Street to thrive and it has a mixture of shops that is unique in the Brighton and Hove area. The usual pattern in Sussex has been that pedestrianisation has been welcome after initial opposition by many traders. Duke Street in Brighton is a notable example. If the experiment in George Street is successful, it can be made permanent and improvements planned, especially better access to the Malvern Street car park.
