CHILD abuse experts were meeting today to find new measures to deal with paedophiles.

The conference has been organised by Sussex Police and is chaired by Chief Constable Paul Whitehouse. Sussex Police has taken the lead in the issue since it granted child sex killer Robert Oliver safe refuge in Brighton after he was hounded from town to town. The conference is being hosted in London by the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Delinquents and by the Law Society. Det Chief Insp George Smith, head of Brighton CID, who supervised Oliver's stay, was addressing the seminar. The case of Oliver, who has now been removed to a secure mental hospital since living in a police cell for his own safety, has raised concern that the notification measures are leading to public panic and witch hunts. Mark Jordan, Sussex deputy chief constable, has called for judges to be given powers to detain paedophiles until they are deemed safe for release.
