BRIGHTON and Hove Council has issued some figures about development in the towns which give a snapshot of what is happening at the moment.

More housing is being provided, particularly on brownfield, town centre sites, which must be good news. Shoping development has been static but much more will come on stream with the Goldstone retail park in Hove and Churchill Square redevelopment in Brighton. More cafes, bars and pubs are being provided and the trend is for that to continue to expand. Office development is not moving much at all. But the really worrying trend is in industry with not one new development started at all last year in Brighton. That single statistic should be rushed from Brighton up to Whitehall, accompanied by a plea for assisted area status. Without it, there is little chance of attracting badly needed new companies.
