RESIDENTS in a Sussex village may have to be evacuated after bomb disposal experts were called in to look for wartime mines.
Emergency planners are preparing to create an exclusion zone around Ford Airfield, near Arundel, after a survey, carried out in advance of proposed sewage works, found there could still be explosives buried at the Second World War base. During the war a network of explosive pipemines were laid so that the runways could be blown up if the Germans invaded. If a new clearance operation is needed, residents will be told at a public meeting and by leaflets what they should do. The survey was requested by Southern Water as part of the preparations for the planned new sewage works on the site.
