ALDRINGTON Halt is a handy local station for many people living in the central part of Hove, especially around Poets' Corner.
It used to be staffed by a friendly series of British Rail officials who issued tickets and kept an eye on the safety of customers. Staff cuts have meant that for many years, Aldrington has been unmanned and it is no longer a welcoming place. Vandals deface everything they can with graffiti and at night it is a lonely spot which can be frightening, especially for women on their own. Train operators Connex South Central are aware of the problem. Staff visit Aldrington each day and CCTV cameras may be installed to help security. But ideally the station should be staffed at least some of the time. It is just possible that the extra income derived from collecting fares and attracting more passengers would make this worthwhile and it would engender a lot of goodwill.
