BUSINESS and council chiefs today unveiled a blueprint to save Brighton town centre.

They are concerned that Western Road could suffer when the renovated Churchill Square opens. Top stores will be moving into the £90 million complex and business leaders fear for the rest of Western Road. Ideas being considered include converting stores for entertainment use or restaurants. Major chains not represented in the town are to be encouraged to move to Western Road. Council chiefs and the town centre business forum have produced plans to ensure business booms between the Square and Montpelier Road. The council has already approved plans for part of the old Debenhams store to be converted into a three-tier restaurant. Debenhams will be moving into Churchill Square. The businessmen suggest an information kiosk in Churchill Square and signs pointing out other areas of interest such as Preston Street, The Lanes and North Laine. Roger French, vice-chairman of Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce, said: "There is concern that when Churchill Square opens, other retailers will move there and leave gaps."
