SUSSEX strike bowler Jason Lewry is facing more injury heartbreak.

He could be out until the end of June if keyhole surgery reveals he needs an operation on his troublesome shoulder.

The 27-year-old was having an exploratory operation this morning which will determine whether he needs further surgery on an injury which has plagued him since last August.

Lewry was forced to return home early from England A's tour of Zimbabwe after the problem flared up again during net practice.

He had further scans on his return to Hove but they still haven't revealed the extent of the damage.

The worst case scenario is that Lewry will need an operation to repair a tear to the tendons in his left shoulder.

That would rule him out for 14-15 weeks, according to Sussex physio Tim Wright.

If the damage is less serious, Lewry will have a minor operation which will sideline him for up to eight weeks.

Either way, any surgery will be carried out in the next 24 hours after the extent of the injury is known.

Wright said: "The scans have not proved conclusive. At worst it's a full shoulder operation or it might not be that bad and he can get away with some minor surgery.

"When it first flared up Jason responded well to physio which is why he was able to go to the A team tour, it all depends on what sort of condition the tendons are in now."

Lewry, who captured 62 Championship wickets last season, took seven wickets on the winter tour despite also suffering knee problems and food poisoning.

He said: "What will be will be, it feels okay at the moment and hopefully I will only be out for a few weeks."
